Elliott Phear, CEO
As written by: William Goodman, Creative Director
What one album would he like to have on a deserted island?
The Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St. He's always playing that album in the office.
What would his last meal be?
A single Braeburn apple, eaten with the concentration and speed of a man doing something he really loves to do.
What was the first thing you noticed about him when you met him?
Elliott is larger-than-life. He’s 6’5”, his smile is giant, and his laugh is huge.
What does he add to make Phear Creative's agency culture better?
We’re happy, we dig each other, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we have fun, and we get shit done. That’s a reflection of Elliott.
What is his favorite quote?
“If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.” – Bukowski
What is his favorite place to visit?
The Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York, near the U.S. / Canadian border. And the break at Rockaway Beach, where he regularly surfs.
Besides his cellphone, what is one thing he never leaves home without?
Elliott can’t live without his music. Mp3s, vinyl, six strings… his love of music takes on many different forms, but he’s always rocking one or the other.
What is his one rule for life?
“Don’t let anything get in the way of your happiness, your joy, your love.” And he means it. Elliott is a path-clearer. He wants his people to be great. Individually and collectively.
What experience shaped who he has become?
The fact that his background isn’t traditional/digital advertising. Elliott’s not an ad guy. His approach is fresh and enthusiastic, and free of the bruised cynicism that’s so typical of the agency world.
What is most valuable to him?
Elliott really, genuinely values people. He appreciates everyone’s little quirks. He’s like the mayor of the Island of Misfit Toys. He's just sitting up there smiling, telling everyone they’re just right.
Finish this sentence: He has a tendency to....
Get excited about stuff like a giant kid. Elliott still shows up on shoots and goes around high-fiving everyone because he’s just so stoked to see the people he works with knocking out great work.
What are some other things he’s done worth mentioning?
Elliott produced MTV's Total Request Live, which gave him a chance to work with everyone from Steve-O to Jay Z, Kid Rock to 50 Cent and beyond.
What drives him crazy?
I stole an apple out of his office one time and was met with a rather cool reception.
